Skarsgård portrays Eddie Barrish, a negligent father who is delinquent on both child and spousal support payments. At the outset, he is attempting to repair his car but lacks the necessary funds, leading him to gamble on scratch-off lottery tickets in hopes of bridging the gap between his finances and the mechanic's fees. In a misguided attempt to find valuables, Eddie breaks into an incorrect SUV. Shortly thereafter, the vehicle locks itself, and he receives a phone call from an enigmatic individual.

Classical music intermittently plays until Eddie realizes that the caller is a man named William, portrayed brilliantly by Anthony Hopkins, who informs Eddie that he has chosen the wrong vehicle to invade. In a humorous moment, a woman approaches the car while Eddie is yelling, but due to the soundproof nature of the vehicle and its tinted windows, she merely checks her reflection to apply lipstick. Eddie might have resigned himself to the grim fate that William has planned for him if it were not for his love for his young daughter, Sarah. Instead, he fiercely resists as he navigates William's twisted game, which involves concealing nutrients in various compartments of the car while William secretly tends to Eddie's injuries as he sleeps.

Although we hear Hopkins' voice, his physical presence is withheld for a significant duration, effectively heightening the film's tension. The atmosphere is thick with suspense as Eddie becomes entangled in a deranged scheme of retribution orchestrated by William against Eddie for the misdeeds of others that have adversely affected William's life.
